Achyut Potdar died at the age of 91

The actor Achyut Potdar passed away at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he was admitted because of health problems.

 

Veteran Marathi actor Achyut Potdar, known for his frequent roles in Hindi films, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025. He was 91 years old.

 

The actor breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he had been admitted due to health complications. However, the exact cause of his death has not yet been revealed.

 

His funeral is scheduled to take place on August 19 in Thane. Fans and the film fraternity are mourning the loss of the veteran actor, who left behind a rich legacy of memorable performances.

Actor Achyut Potdar performance in films

Achyut Potdar’s acting career lasted for more than forty years, during which he became a familiar face in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. He appeared in over 125 films, earning respect as a versatile supporting actor who could adapt to many roles.

His body of work reflected a fine mix of commercial blockbusters and critically praised films. From intense dramas like Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai and Ardh Satya to popular entertainers such as Tezaab, Dilwale and Hum Saath Saath Hain, Potdar showcased his wide acting range.

 

He was also part of iconic titles including Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2 and the Marathi film Ventilator. Through these performances, Potdar carved a lasting legacy in Indian cinema.

Famous from ‘ 3 idiots ‘

He was best known for his role as a strict professor in Aamir Khan’s movie 3 Idiots. Along with films, he also worked a lot in television. He appeared in many popular shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, All The Best on Doordarshan, Pradhan Mantri and Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo on Zee TV, Aahat on Sony TV, Wagle Ki Duniya, and the Marathi show Majha Hoshil Na.

Career in different fields 

Before starting his career in films and theatre, Achyut Potdar worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. He later joined the Indian Army and served until 1967, when he retired with the rank of captain.

After leaving the army, he joined Indian Oil as an executive. He worked there for almost 25 years and retired in 1992 at the age of 58. At 44, he took his first step into Bollywood to follow his love for acting.

Potdar became very popular when one of his lines from the film 3 Idiots — “Arey kehna kya chahte ho” — went viral on social media, turning into a famous meme.

His work in Indian cinema and television has left a mark, and future generations will continue to remember his contributions.
