TikTok Ban in India: A Quick Look Back

It was banned in India in June 2020, making it one of the biggest app bans in the country’s history. The move came after rising tensions between India and China, especially following the clash in Galwan Valley where 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives.

Soon after, the Indian government blocked 59 Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok. At that time, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad described the decision as “India’s digital strike” against China.

The ban not only removed it  from app stores but also stopped its operations completely in India, leaving millions of users and creators without access.

Even today, it remains unavailable in India, and the 2020 ban is remembered as a turning point in the country’s digital policy.
